Characteristics and Application
42CrMo steel is ultra-high strength steel, with high strength and toughness, hardenability is also good, no obvious tempering brittleness, small deformation during quenching, high fatigue limit and resistance to multiple shocks after tempering treatment, good low temperature impact toughness, high creep strength and lasting strength at high temperature. It is generally used after tempering and can replace tempered steel with higher nickel content. The steel is usually treated by surface quenching after tempering.
It is used to manufacture important parts with higher requirements or larger cross-section size than 35CrMo steel, such as large gears for locomotive traction, supercharger transmission gears, rear shafts, transmission gears, engine cylinders, connecting rods with great loads, spring clips, and drill pipe joints and fishing tools for 1200~2000m deep oil Wells. The steel is also suitable for the manufacture of large and medium-sized plastic molds requiring certain strength and toughness.
42CrMo steel can obtain a wide range of properties through a variety of heating methods.
42CrMo steel material has good cutting performance. Suitable for drilling, sawing, broaching, tapping, milling and other processing.
But 42CrMo steel material is not easy to weld. 42CrMo steel is not recommended for welding in the quenched tempering (QT) state. Because it will change the mechanical properties of 42CrMo steel welding heat affected zone. 42CrMo steel allows welding under annealed conditions.
